Abstract. The research focus of the article is a substantive analysis of the social responsibility of Russian companies in sustainable social development. The authors have shown that modern sustainable social development directly depends on the social responsibility of business. Employees of Russian companies demonstrate social responsibility, and a secondary analysis of the VCIOM data, “Business Social Responsibility: Monitoring,” has been implemented to assess it. Based on a comparative analysis, conclusions are drawn about the dynamics of public opinion among Russians about business social responsibility as well as about the perception of business social responsibility by respondents who work in the commercial and public sectors. The social responsibility of Russian companies in sustainable social development is manifested in expanding the focus of business goals from making a profit to simultaneously implementing internal social policy towards employees and interacting with the external social environment. This shows sustainable social development. It is determined that the social responsibility of Russian companies develops asynchronously. Some companies are at the stage of indifference towards solving social issues, while others are at the stage of implementing active social practices aimed at companies inside and outside. It is shown that respondents associate the prospects for sustainable social development with the social responsibility of businessmen and with the institutional development of Russian business. It is concluded that commercial sector employees focus on the internal content of business responsibility (taking care of staff and increasing wages and working conditions), while public sector employees more often associate business social responsibility with external environmental impacts, providing social assistance to the public and paying taxes. The prospects for further research are related to the study of the impact of internal processes in Russian companies on the activity of social business practices in relation to local communities.

Key words: sustainable social development, Russian companies, employees, social responsibility, sustainable development goals.
