Abstract. The comprehension of being of a mathematical object does not begin with the description of its quantitative parameters any time – before answering a question "how many?", it is necessary to ask a question "what is?". It is shown that a qualitative approach in mathematics is applied at all levels of analysis, because every mathematical object has to be comprehended and defined in its qualitative aspect first of all.

Key words: quality, quantity, relation, structure, ontological categories, mathematical object.
