Abstract. The article raises the philosophical problem of understanding the phenomenon of personality in Russian religious philosophy of the 19-20th centuries on the example of the philosophical doctrine by L.P. Karsavin. On the one hand, the author of the article reveals the Eastern Christian roots of interpretation of the concept of personality in Karsavin's philosophy, and on the other hand, she shows the new content ideas and features introduced by the Russian thinker into the notion of personality. This fact leads to the formulation of the methodological problem of understanding the concept of "Russian religious philosophy". The author argues that this concept unites different doctrines which are sometimes not connected with the Christian metaphysics and anthropology. On the example of the philosophical doctrine of the personality by L.P. Karsavin, the author shows the ambiguity of applying the terms "Christian philosophy" and "Christian philosopher" to Karsavin's personality. The term "Russian idealist philosophy of the 19-20th centuries is proposed for use in this kind of doctrines.
