Abstract. Social identity in contemporary society is a process of involvement of people in the society. This is the attitude, by which a person consciously defines its internal value-semantic proximity or remoteness in relation to different communities, classes, social strata and groups. In modern society, social identity is experiencing a significant influence of the objective conditions in which it is formed, fixed, redefined or transformed. Social reality gives the identity a number of specific features which to a large extent determine the outcome of the identification process. This article presents an analysis of the major contemporary social and philosophical approaches to the problem of the formation of social identity – the activity and constructivism. The author also highlights the subjective directions and guidelines of humans in the process of social self-determination.

Key words: social identity, identification, modern society, personality, social reality.
