Abstract. The article deals with the methodological issues of studying the development of perception phenomenon in the modern philosophical theory. The author points out the key meanings, including the metaphorical ones, connected with the notion of perception, and proves that the conceptualization of ideas about perception requires new grounds. It is proposed to use the ideas of M.K. Mamardashvili and such modern psychologists as V.A. Barabanshchikov and E.V. Subbotsky. The author analyzes the interrelation of perception, understanding, and ontologization and underlines that we must consider perception as a system. Perception is connected with certain ontological schemes through understanding, and the way of world ontologization – with the development of thinking traditions. The conclusion is drawn on the multilevel character of the described processes.

Key words: perception, levels of perception, illusions of perception, comprehension, understanding, ontologization.
