Abstract. The article studies the problem of modern society development, organized on the principles of economocentrism – ideological settings which absolutize the role of economic factor in the social dynamics. The penetration of logic and psychology of total exchange, as well as the principles of commercialization in a wide range of social transactions, lead to the unfavorable functioning of the society, putting it at risk of degradation and decay. It is noted that the scope of risks is steadily increasing, involving a number of new phenomena that were not previously considered as risky. The author highlights the risks typical for economocentric society, indicates their destructive potential, studies the possible resolutions. It is proposed to oppose the economocentric logic to the principles of cultural determinism, focusing on the consideration of economic phenomena in the context of sociocultural reality in which these processes are carried out. According to the author, the change of the vector of sociocultural development from the economy to culture will help to improve the situation of social development in general. It requires close attention to be paid to the personality. The issues on the identifying landmarks of the modern man, the type of person – consuming, economic or cultural, creative – largely determines the strategy of human actions in the society, defines the vector of the social system development. In this connection, according to the author, it is necessary to develop new models of economic development that would be focused not on abstract goal of increasing profits, and the specific needs of the individual, understood in terms of “economic man”, but in terms of “rounded individuals”. According to the author, in modern economic thought on the role of this promising model there is the idea of the “economy of happiness” – the direction of economic thought, promoting the fullness of human life that goes beyond its economics as the main target of socioeconomic development.
