Abstract. The article presents an analysis of the perception of the adolescent population of a small town – the territory of residence – an assessment of the degree of its rootedness. As a method, one of the art methods was used – the analysis of 68 pairs of drawings made by students of grades 5-6 of secondary schools in small towns of the Nizhny Novgorod region (Zavolzhye and Gorodets). Drawing was characterized by spontaneity and the absence of a verbal or visual pattern. The analysis allowed us to take into account the social characteristics of children (gender, age, and city of residence). The analysis of the drawings was based on a certain coding system presented in the works of sociologists who used this art method. The article discusses theoretical approaches to conducting such a study and presents the elements that formed the basis of the analysis carried out. Zavolzhye and Gorodets of the Nizhny Novgorod region are typical small towns located in the same administrative-territorial entity, characterized by sufficient proximity to the regional center, a similar economic profile, accessibility to the transport network, pronounced socio-cultural and industrial traditions, and an established activity landscape through which the processes of urban development are more clearly manifested, including the determinants of youth commitment to it. The study of adolescents' attitudes towards their small homeland through drawings seems to be a promising approach due to the possibility of identifying universal factors of rejection and rooting for future adults' characteristic of small towns. The research results are considered in the context of the author's concept of activity-based landscaping. Based on the analysis, the typology of the demographic group under consideration has been constructed with the identification of social groups in it, differing in varying degrees of rootedness in the territory of residence, and the characteristics of the formed groups have been identified. The implemented research model and methodology can be applied in other small territories to understand the possibilities of involving adolescents in existing or emerging grassroots socio-economic practices in order to preserve and root young people in the territory, including through involvement in interaction with the main local social actors and integration into the processes of territorial social and economic development. A vision of the direction of further research on the development of the concept of activity-based landscaping is presented.
Key words: activity-based landscaping, art method, small town, migration, rootedness, territorial development, conservation of people.
