Abstract: Historical and philosophical context of modernization, presented in the article, helps to consider the process as a cultural and historical process which is not limited to technological innovations. The authors raise the question of the appropriateness of introducing western modernization matrix in Russia, stressing the need to find a spiritual meaning, an 'ultra-idea' capable of uniting society and inspiring creativity.
