Abstract: The article focuses on the notions of modernization and innovation, defines their significance in establishing Russia as a competitive state. The author introduces the classification of modernization and discloses specific features of current modernization as an innovation oriented process. The relationships between modernization and innovation are analyzed. The stages of the innovation process are discussed.
