Abstract. In their paper, Nikolay Omelchenko and Ekaterina Pasharina discuss the norms of the ethos of science, ambivalence of scholars, the principle of doubt in the conception of Robert Merton. By this, they believe that an unscientific interest (for example, aspiration for beauty in proof or theory) is objectively present in the process of scientific cognition, and love as a heuristic principle can be eventually included into the ethos of science.

Key words: ethos of science, ambivalence of scholars, doubt, scepticism, truth
