Abstract. A tremendous stream of refugees has rushed to Russia today due to the political situation in Ukraine. In Volgograd and in the Volgograd Region 8230 citizens of Ukraine have been registered in Migration Service so far. Emigrants and refugees are one of the possible causes of crisis in society. Researchers are often concerned about the problem “How are refugees perceived?”, and they seldom wonder how refugees perceive local residents. The article gives the results of the study on the problem of relations between local communities and refugees. The analysis of reasons causing tension between locals and refugees is also presented. Inter-ethnical relations are those between groups on the one hand, and on the other hand, they are relations towards groups (from positive images to stereotypes and even prejudices). Significant points that influence the successful adaptation of refugees as well as the choice of the country to move are emphasized, too. Practice shows, that social and psychological adaptation of refugees is complicated. It is connected with both objective circumstances (lack of jobs, absence of a refugee status and others) and subjective factors (anxiety, fears, violence, conflicts in families and in direct-contact groups, psychosomatic diseases, alcohol addiction). In our research particular emphasis will be placed on subjective factors.

Key words: stereotypes, refugees, inter-ethnic relations, economic situation, an emergency, psychological assistance.
