Abstract: It is shown that Bentham's understanding of the nature of things has much in common with the ideas of Aristotle. Particular attention is paid to the so-called spiritual entities, which, according to Bentham, are real and immaterial. Realizing Bentham's paramount interest in jurisprudence we explained his aspirations to replace fictions that have a questionable relation to the substances with the names of real things.

Key words: Jeremy Bentham, nominalism, entity, substance, fiction.
